Our fellow ATC writers share their thoughts and answer some questions on our 2-1 victory against Rennes in the UEFA Champions League.

Question 1: We didn’t play our best today and credit to Rennes but how important is getting wins like these especially in a jam packed schedule?
It’s really important to dig the ugly win out on the odd occasion as it mirrors the resolve and the character of the squad. Even when not playing at their best, which is bound to happen on plenty of occasions during this wretched and packed season, great teams find a way through and it helps boost the confidence in the dressing room and gives the group a lift.
Question 2: Who impressed you the most? The least?
Mason Mount and Thiago Silva stood out for me. Mount, despite the number of games he’s been playing for club and country, played perhaps his best game in a Chelsea shirt. Thiago Silva made quite the return to the lineup with a solid defensive display. Ben Chilwell had a night to forget after a couple of his misplaced passes almost led to goals and he missed a great chance towards the end. Jorginho and Kovacic didn’t have the best of games either.
Question 3: Should Werner rest on Sunday against Spurs for CHO who looked good?
Though Hudson-Odoi’s performance would have pleased Lampard, he can’t possibly bench a big-match player such as Werner while he’s in fine form in front of goal. True, we’re yet to see the best of the German but the signs are encouraging and I assume Callum would’ve been brought in today for Timo with one eye on Sunday’s London derby.

Question 1: Should Chelsea make any glaring changes to Saturday based on today’s performance?
I believe the Saturday match won’t be approached as this. For instance, we’ve always played with 4-3-3 but tonight we switched to 4-2-3-1 perhaps to accommodate Jo-vacic and manage fitness in the process. So I expect the Saturday match to be like the previous league matches.
Question 2: Two things you liked from tonight?
That we struggled for most part of the match and still won. It’s a trait of a good team. We came under pressure often but we dealt with them fairly. If this was last season, the final score could be the same but capsized. I love it, Liverpool built a dynasty off that trait. Another thing I liked was Thiago Silva. I mean, I know well he’s generational but when he prove himself again he deserve the praise. As we didn’t own the match enough, surely our defenders would always be in action. So Silva excelled in all aspect, his line-breaking passes to initiate attack also deserve a shout.
Question 3: Any particular performances that impressed tonight? And why?
Edouard Mendy, for keeping us in the game. Albeit he conceded but we would concede 2-3 if it was another goalkeeper. And also Mason Mount, because of that pass!
Question 1: What did you like from the match? What you didn’t like?
This match was definitely a hard fought one, with a full ninety minutes of uneasiness. Despite the goal we conceded and the amount of missed chances, a win is a win at the end of the day. It wasn’t pretty, but the team spirit and cohesiveness is growing, which is important for games like these. We also managed to rest a few key players, so that is a big positive.
Question 2: Who’s your MOTM? Why?
My MOTM was definitely Mason Mount, he was simply sensational today. The assist for the first goal was amazing, good enough for Cesc Fabregas’ approval as well! The sharpness in his passing and link-up showed us why he deserves to start for us, and silenced his haters. Defensively, Mount also pressed hard for the match, and provided good cover for the back four.
Question 3: In your opinion, Did Jorginho play well today? And does he deserve more PT or is our midfield already sorted?
Jorginho wasn’t very good today, especially defensively, but did enough to move the ball around quickly. There was a lot of unwarranted hate for him today, despite the fact we won and he didn’t really commit any major errors. I think Jorginho is an important player for us, but he is also not a very adjustable player, meaning he is a system player. If we continue this 433 with Kante at DM, he will struggle to get game-time considering he can’t play as an 8 at all. I still have a feeling he will play a good amount if we ever use a 4231 or another formation because he was excellent at the start of the season.
