It’s been a busy set of games for our youngsters and seniors out on loan this week, here’s what went down this Halloween weekend.
Starting in the Premier League, Fridays match between Wolves and Crystal Palace saw only one Chelsea loanee in action, that being Michy Batshuayi who had a frustrating evening as Palace lost 2-0.
The early kick off on Saturday saw Sheffield United host Manchester City where the Blades suffered a 1-0 defeat making them winless in the opening 7 games. Ethan Ampadu started and played 65 minutes in holding midfield, he coped really well from a lot of pressing from the Manchester City midfield. Frank Lampard addressed early on this season that he see’s Ampadu as a holding midfielder where he can showcase all of his attributes he posses and we have seen glimpses of that already at Sheffield United.
Aston Villa have impressed many this season, especially one of Chelsea’s senior loanee’s Ross Barkley who has contributed 4 goal contributions in 3 games for Villa, including a goal against Liverpool on his debut in that incredible 7-2 victory at Villa Park. Barkley started in a tough game against Southampton in the lunch time kick off on Sunday where Villa wanted to bounce back from last weeks defeat where former Chelsea academy product Patrick Bamford got a hat-trick. Villa lost 4-3, though from being 4-0 down that is now back to back defeats for Aston Villa. Barkley played the full 90 minutes but didn’t manage to find his finishing touch like he has in recent weeks.
Monday night saw a couple promising Chelsea loanee’s in action as they fight to be in Chelsea first team next season in Ruben Loftus Cheek (Fulham) and Conor Gallagher (West Brom). A huge game for both clubs after they were both promoted last season from the Championship. Fulham won 2-0 however Loftus Cheek was an unused substitute in their first win of the season. Conor Gallagher played a full 90 but was on the losing side again this week. It’s nice to see Gallagher showing his qualities in this West Brom side, a player who wants to break into the first team picture next season.
More over now and dropping down into the Championship, Chelsea loanee’s had a rather frustrating weekend unless your Swansea centre half Marc Guehi who’s Swansea side kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory over play off promotion chasing Blackburn Rovers. Guehi played a full 90 minutes in a solid performance by the Chelsea man, who looks to get into the Chelsea first team next season, avid the speculation on 2-3 of Chelsea’s defenders. Still only 20 and given some minutes by Lampard last season, he is a very promising player and fits Lampard’s style of play, playing it out from the back and doesn’t mess around when dealing with a dead ball. He is set to be a key presence for Swansea at the back as the Swans look to get back into the Premier League next season and are currently second in the Championship.
Jamal Blackman was in goal as struggling Rotherham lost 1-0, a story that has summed up Rotherham this season, they just lack that attacking potency and defensive awareness. Sheffield Wednesday sit rock bottom on minus points due to breaching FFP rules, they lost 1-0 to Wycombe who finally registered their first win of the season following their first point of the season in mid week. Izzy Brown, another prospect only got half an hour off the bench, a player who needs to find his touch again after not getting many minutes in his time at Leeds United last season.
In League one, Josh McCormick was one of two Chelsea youngster in action, where he played a 15 minute cameo for Bristol Rovers in a 1-1 draw away at Rochdale. Ian Maatsen played a full 90 and contributed an assist for former Crystal Palace man Jonny Williams in the 26th minute. Maatsen also got a caution, but nonetheless it didn’t matter as he also kept a clean sheet for Charlton in a 2-0 victory against Portsmouth.
Finally for the English football league, Jamie Cumming final recorded his first senior clean sheet in a 0-0 draw at home to Grimsby Town, hopefully the first one of many for the Chelsea goalkeeper.
Heading overseas now to Holland, Armando Broja was on target as Vitesse came from behind to win 3-1. Broja looks to fight for a place into the first team next season but I think a premier league loan or championship loan can do him a lot of good before a step into the first season.
Matthew Miazga played a full 90 minutes for Anderlecht and kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Antwerp in the Belgian Pro League. Staying in Belgium, on loan forward Ike Ugbo had a disappointing day in a 3-0 defeat to Charleroi, however Ugbo has scored 4 goals in 8 appearance for Cercle Brugge this season.
Staying in Europe and heading to Russia, Victor Moses has started life well at Spartak Moscow however yesterday they lost 1-0 to 10 man FC Rostov. Moses however was on target last week against Chelsea’s opponents last Wednesday in the Champions League, Krasnodar.
In Italy, forgotten Chelsea man Tiemoue Bakayoko played a full 90 minutes in a 2-0 defeat at home Sassuolo. In Turkey Lewis Baker played a full 90 minutes for Eddie Newton’s side Trabzonspor who unfortunately lost 4-3 at home in a 7 goal thriller.
Kenedy was an unused substitute for Granada in their 1-1 draw against Levante leaving Granada sitting in 5th place in La Liga after 7 games with one game in hand.
