Chelsea right-back Reece James has been promoted to England’s senior set-up ahead of this week’s international break.
James, who has been called up for the first time by Gareth Southgate, has firmly established himself as one of England’s brightest defensive prospects.
A mainstay of Frank Lampard’s new-look Chelsea side, the 20-year-old is widely expected to play an integral role as The Blues look to bridge the gap to Liverpool and Manchester City.
It is yet to be seen whether James will oust any of Southgate’s established full-back options. Although with fellow Chelsea teammate Ben Chilwell under investigation following pictures of him at a party that contravened government guidelines, the FA will likely announce changes to the original squad that could explain James’s inclusion.
Southgate purposely operated without a left-back during the last round of international fixtures, and it appears his hand has been forced once more following Chilwell’s actions.
