Chelsea have made a big statement in the Premier League before a ball has even been kicked. We’ve added some highly rated players to the pact, including the wizard of Amsterdam Hakim Ziyech (Ajax), German international Timo Werner (RB Leipzig) and Thiago Silva (PSG) who has been one of the best central defenders for the past decade. Not forgetting the imminent arrival of one of the best young talents in world football in Kai Havertz, Frank Lampard and his Chelsea side are set to take this season by storm, or so you think?
On paper with the signings the Chelsea have made thus far, neutral and some Chelsea supporters have suggested Frank Lampard’s men should be gunning for the title. Every season at Chelsea Football Club one of the top priorities is to secure a trophy and secure qualification for Champions League football.
Last season, Frank Lampard didn’t have a lot pressure to deliver a trophy in his first season as first team coach. This is due to the fact Chelsea had a transfer ban, lost the magical Eden Hazard, who undoubtedly was the best player in the premier league for a number of years and Chelsea had many gaps to fill in the squad, but couldn’t.
However, by now we are all aware Chelsea exceeded expectations by securing top four and qualifying for football’s most prestigious competition for the upcoming campaign. Frank guided Chelsea to the Last 16 of the champions league as well as an FA Cup Finally. The injection of youth into the Chelsea side also proved pivotal with youngsters Tammy Abraham being the clubs top marksman with 18 goals in all competitions. The introduction of youngsters Mason Mount, Reece James and Fikayo Tomori also made impressive contributions in the their first season with the first team.
If you compared some Chelsea fans standpoint on what Chelsea would achieve at the beginning of last season to this beginning of this season, it a lot different. I spoke to two Chelsea supporters and both stated (George, 23 & Michael, 21) they would be happy with a “top three finish and a trophy” however one supporter did also express he wanted to feel “confident” going into games, which is something Chelsea have lacked the last couple of years or so, especially as our home form hasn’t been very solid, it’s time to to make Stamford Bridge a fortress again.
My own ideologies of our expectations for this upcoming season is to secure top four and compete for a trophy at the very least because it’s apart of the DNA at Chelsea. What is important for the supporters to remember is that the club is still in a transition and building towards something. Just remember, something special is happening at Chelsea Football Club.
