The latest name Chelsea are set to acquire this summer is Thiago Silva. The name itself is one which will no doubt excite many Chelsea fans and even at the age of 35, he will be a wonderful addition on and off the pitch.

Thiago Silva is widely regarded as one of the best and most consistent CB’s in recent times with spells at AC Milan and PSG providing him with a platform to showcase his undeniable defensive qualities and imposing leadership skills. One thing that makes him a perfect match for Chelsea is his plethora of accolades and trophies. Silva boasts over 20 trophies with PSG including 7 league titles. Moreover, his time in Italy saw him win the Serie A and the Confederation cup in 2013 and Copa America just last year with Brazil tops off his impressive cabinet. Having captained his side to a UCL final just last week, it is fair to say that Silva is still performing at a high level and claims that Chelsea are signing a ‘finished’ CB are made without substance.

Thiago Silva has enjoyed yet another successful season with PSG whilst being an ever-present at the back. He appeared in 21 out of the 27 league games that were played and 9 out of the 11 Champions League games with 6 of those games ending in a clean sheet for the commanding Brazilian.

His detailed league stats for the season were yet again at an extremely high level as he showed no signs of declining with age. Thiago Silva boasts an impressive 68.5% of dribblers tackled which was ranked 2nd in the whole of Ligue 1. Considering issues Chelsea’s CB’s have faced against competent dribblers in the final third, Silva may well be the perfect solution. Furthermore, Thiago Silva won 64% of tackles attempted this season which is an impressive number. For context, in comparison to Chelsea’s current CB’s, Silva would top the list comfortably (Rudiger 56%, Zouma 51%, Tomori 50% and Christensen 49%).

Frank Lampard’s system requires his centre-backs to be competent passers of the ball and Thiago Silva yet again dominates the current defenders at Chelsea in this department with a 96% pass completion rate and an incredible 94% long pass completion. When compared to Rudiger, Zouma, Tomori and Christensen, it is the Dane who expectedly comes closest with 92% pass completion.

It is no surprise that Frank and Chelsea have moved quickly to snap up the class Thiago Silva on a free transfer when all things are considered. Though it must be said that the challenges the Premier League brings is different to what Silva would have faced In Ligue 1 and he will have great expectations to succeed right from the start. If his stats and current level of performance is anything to go by, he will have no issues whatsoever.

In Thiago Silva, Chelsea are signing one of the most admired and well-rounded CB’s in World football over the last decade. The expectations will be high and there’s no doubt he will be one of the first names on the team sheet. It is too early to tell which CB pairing Frank Lampard will opt for with rumours circulating that Tomori could be on loan and Christensen, Zouma and Rudiger’s futures not certain by any means. However, a personal choice of mine would no doubt be Kurt Zouma. The intimidating Frenchman showed how true class following the restart and provided the arial dominance that had been missing in Chelsea’s defence for the majority of the season. With Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma defending Chelsea’s corners, it doesn’t matter who the goalkeeper is.

Chelsea showed that a lack of leadership was also an issue not only last season but in seasons previous. Silva is one of the great leaders In modern day football and his vast experience and expertise will prove to be instrumental not only on the pitch but off it. With the youth Chelsea are investing in, it is paramount to have the right experience to balance the squad and Thiago Silva will be crucial in that aspect. So much so that many have called for Thiago Silva to be given the captaincy for the coming season with the emergence of Reece James likely to limit Azpilicueta’s appearances.
