Today Chelsea completed the signing of highly-rated Netherlands youngster Xavier Mbuyamba on a free transfer from Barcelona, after they were forced to cut large numbers of youth players from their academy as a result of the Coronavirus Pandemic.
Mbuyamba has been training with the development squad recently and signed his contract with Chelsea earlier in the week. Mbuyamba had previously planned to join Chelsea last summer, but the FIFA enforced transfer ban prevented him from doing so.
12 months later, the move is complete. Mbuyamba has signed a contract to remain with Chelsea until 2023. Next season he’s expected to either continue his progress with the development squad or the club will find him a suitable loan move.
Whilst this move may not have all the glamour of a Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner or Kai Havertz type transfer, don’t be any less excited for Xavier. He is regarded as one of the best players in his position for his age and his potential is frightening. This is just another example of how serious this club is taking the rebuild, and I for one cannot wait to watch this guy develop.
