Emma Hayes’ foot is set firmly on the pedal and it’s not coming off any time soon. Chelsea just announced the signing of Canadian International Jessie Fleming from UCLA Bruins. This is the 3rd signing ahead of the 20/21 season and is an addition to our midfield prowess after the recent signings of Melanie Leupolz and Niamh Charles.
Who is she?
Fleming is a midfielder whose potential has been evident since she came on to the Footballing scene. Her first shot in the international limelight came during the 2013 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship where she captained Canada to a silver medal and to an Under-17 World Cup qualification. Not long after that, she made her senior team debut for the national team at just 15 years old. She’s gone on to feature 77 times for the senior national team and has 14 goal contributions for them so far. She was also part of the Canadian team that won bronze at the 2016 Olympics and has featured in two World Cups with the senior team already.
Up until now, Fleming has played collegiate football with the prestigious UCLA Bruins, featuring 75 times and scoring 25 goals.
Her personal accolades include 3 Under-20 female Canadian player of the year and back-to-back appearances in the CONCACAF Women’s Championship Best XI.
All a testament to the quality of player we’ve got and heads up for what to expect from her.
What should we expect?
Fleming is a central midfielder with almost equal defensive and attacking abilities. She has an eye for goal but would also work hard to retain possession in the midfield. You’ll often see her venturing forward in a bid to exploit any openings in the opponent’s box. Her addition to the team would not only increase our midfield strength but would also create more options for us going forward and create some defensive assurance for us at the back as well. This last point is especially important seeing as Chelsea already have so much attacking minded players. Fleming’s arrival adds extra balance to the team.
What she said
‘For Chelsea it was the players here and I wanted to be in a challenging environment. Having conversations with Emma [Hayes] and learning a bit more about the team, I was just really excited about the environment and what it has to offer.’
What Emma said
‘Jessie is one of the top young players in the world, so for us to be able to sign her is a testament to the work that has been done here for a number of years. She chose Chelsea, this was her priority, her first choice and we were over the moon to get her.’
With each signing one can only wonder what to expect of Chelsea come next season. Hayes is looking in the right direction and for the right people to build a formidable team at Chelsea. Flemming is joining a team already power packed and would no doubt bring along her own firepower. There’s one more exciting player to keep an eye out for when the new season comes along and she’ll be donning the number 17 jersey.
