Rey gives us the lowdown on each player after our impressive victory over Manchester United in the FA Cup Semi Final.
Willy Caballero – 6.5
The Argentine veteran keeper made his return between the sticks having little action to deal with as Chelsea cruised to victory. Willy did his job tonight by sweeping in balls when needed, displaying good contribution and finding several Chelsea players up the field.
Kurt Zouma – 7
The French defender was once again deployed in the heart of our defence, acting as the middle centre back of our back three. Zouma appeared composed on the ball having 11 long balls and eight accurate long balls while accumulating an impressive 85% pass success rate. Kurt was able to get gritty and tight on the United players by giving them no space to work with – Another strong showing.
Reece James – 7
Reece managed to get back at his critics with an impressive outing and demonstrating why he’s essential to the team. His pass success rate was a strong 95%, the second highest out of the squad. He continuously supported Chelsea offensively and defensively, showing his two way capabilities as a wingback/fullback. He also reminded fans of his shooting power after testing De Gea with a powerful shot on target, displaying his full attributes as a player.
Antonio Rüdiger – 6.5
Toni’s aggressiveness worked out tonight as he was able help Chelsea get the third goal by getting into the opposition’s box and forcing Maguire to score an own goal. Rüdiger also helped Chelsea neutralize Manchester United to limited chances. He was another catalyst for the Blues’ play out from the back with an 84% pass success rate and seven accurate long balls. He was on the short end of his duels tonight as he only won three out of his seven chances, but was able to get seven recoveries and a key interception. Overall, an acceptable display from the German national.
The Chelsea skipper was once again resilient in the back, demonstrating his defensive work rate. Cesar assisted Olivier Giroud in the first half with a great cross into the box, helping them score right before the break. He had one nervy moment in the second half where he was outpaced by Marcus Rashford by an over the top ball. Overall though, another strong performance.
Marcos Alonso – 7.5
Chelsea returned to a back three. With little surprise, Marcos Alonso was able to flourish due to this. The Spanish wingback had another excellent defensive showing by winning four of his six duels, eight recoveries and a pair of key interceptions. He also provided some width down the left side by giving Manchester some trouble whenever Chelsea were to overload their flanks.
Jorginho – 7
Jorginho was tightly marked throughout the match; but whenever he was able to get on the ball, he got the ball to a blue shirt. He possessed an 85% pass success rate with four long balls. He also did his job defensively having a 66% duel rate, two interceptions and four recoveries. He struggled at times when Man U got physical in midfield, but the Italian midfielder exhibited his grit and work rate, thus giving fans a good showing.
Mateo Kovačić – 7.5
The Croatian stud once against signified why he’s been one of Chelsea’s best players all season by helping the Blues be solid in the middle of the pitch. Mateo was repeatedly able to break through Manchester’s press with his superb dribbling ability while possessing an outstanding 100% dribble success rate. Kova was another key factor in why Chelsea was able to dominate in midfield by overpowering Manchester in that area by recovering six balls and having three interceptions.
Mason Mount – 8.5
The young Chelsea graduate shut his haters down after a sublime and terrific performance against a tough United side. Mason’s relentless energy was in full effect as he supported Chelsea’s midfield with his defensive work rate and capping the evening with a goal. Mount was able to capitalize on a mistake from United in their own half and tested De Gea with a strong shot on target. De Gea wasn’t able to keep the shot from going in and displayed another poor showing, proving why shooting relentlessly could bear fruit. Mason finished the night with a 92% pass rate, 24 accurate passes, five out of nine successful duels and six recoveries.
Willian – 6.5
The Brazilian continued his hot form by working his boots off defensively. Willian constantly tracked back, especially when United were trying to hurt Chelsea in transition. He had a silent night offensively, but always looked lively on the ball, especially on counters.
Olivier Giroud – 8.5
Manchester United’s centre backs had a hard time dealing with the tall and physical Frenchman as he once again demonstrated his back to goal abilities and also having seven successful duels of his 15 tries. He also won six of his 11 aerials and helped Chelsea get the ball into the final third with his linkup and hold up play. His presence was always a threat for United’s defence as Giroud was able to open the scoreline with a strong centre-forward finish to help the Blues get to the FA Cup finals once again.
