In the fifth part of a new feature, Justin guides us through his favourite Chelsea kit and what it means as a lifelong fan of the club.
When I look back at all my memories supporting this club, from the ups to the downs, there’s always one thing I remember first. The kits.
Football kits are time capsules. They are the remnants of all the emotions a football fan experiences. The anger, the excitement, the nervousness.
Each kit represents a moment of time. And the most significant moment of time in my years of supporting Chelsea can be captured by the 2010/11 home kit.
Although I had seen the odd Chelsea game here and there as my Dad always had it on, I was never emotionally invested. It wasn’t until the 2010/11 season where I could say that I officially became a Chelsea fan.
The red trim on the collar, sleeves, and shorts added a nice refreshing touch to the kit. Not only that but it was so fitting with the iconic Samsung sponsor. The red trim hasn’t been featured since the 1994/95 season. I remember wearing it everywhere I went. From out of uniform days in school to wearing it to sleep.
Despite it being a trophy-less season, this season was a really important time for Chelsea. Players like Joe Cole, Ballack, Deco, and Carvalho were heading out. While new additions like Ramires and later in January the infamous Torres and David Luiz. With Carlos Ancelotti leading the team with world class players like Petr Cech, John Terry, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Drogba, and many more, it was such a exciting season for me. It was the perfect season for me to fall in love with the club.
A very memorable game for me in that kit was the 2-1 home win against Manchester United. With David Luiz scoring a perfectly finished equalizing half volley and Lampard’s winner taken from the penalty spot. An electric game and a win against United is always a fun one.
Although, it wasn’t the best Chelsea season, the season and the 2010/11 home kit will always hold a special place in my heart. It was my first proper Chelsea season and when I started to fall in love with the club. It was the season where I got to see all the Chelsea legends and players like David Luiz play alongside each other. There were so many unforgettable memories that I will always look back at fondly.
Every now and then when I see that kit, I remember why I love this club.
To celebrate the launch of our new home kit, we are teaming up with The Kit Supplier (@thekitsupplier1) to give away FOUR retro shirts of your choice.
