In the second part of a new feature, Konark guides us through his favourite Chelsea kit and what it means to him as a fan.

I have been a Chelsea fan for more than a decade, and we’ve had some fantastic kits down the years. But for some reason, I’ve always been attracted to our black away kits over the years. And one that pops up in my mind first when I think of black shirts is the away shirt in our glorious 2011/12 campaign.

I remember buying that kit when I had gone for a trip to East Africa. It was a little flashy, with the turquoise squares on top of the all black, but I really liked it from the very first time I laid my eyes on it, and I wanted to buy it. I remember wearing it at home, every time Chelsea played that season.

We did not don that kit very often in the season, and did not generally have an impressive record playing in it. There were the iconic ‘ugly’ moments in this shirt, which include both our 3-1 away loss to Napoli in the Champions League and that infamous 1-0 loss at QPR where Jose Bosingwa and Didier Drogba were sent off with tempers were running high.

The happiest memory I can think of when in this shirt was the robo dance of David Luiz and Ramires after scoring in the 1-1 draw against KRC Genk in the Champions League. There was also the 1-0 win against Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road in the FA Cup, which served as satisfying revenge for the tempestuous loss earlier in the season. Ramires, though, remains the first player that springs to mind when I think of that kit.

Although, the memories in terms of victories and glorious moments in that kit aren’t especially numerous, I pick it as my most favourite Chelsea shirt because of my personal memories, and the nostalgia, wearing that kit while supporting the team on its most glorious nights, including the FA cup and the Champions League final victories. While it may not have been the luckiest kit for the team, it definitely was and still is, for me. Definitely one of the underrated kits from this decade, in terms of uniqueness, much like the season it was worn in – full of turbulence, and full of success – but a unique season.

To celebrate the launch of our new home kit, we are teaming up with The Kit Supplier (@thekitsupplier1) to give away FOUR retro shirts of your choice.
