The January transfer window has now finished and Chelsea failed to make a signing. Chelsea suffered a transfer ban and were not allowed to buy players in the summer 2019. In early December the news broke out that Chelsea’s transfer ban had been lifted and were allowed to make signings in the January transfer window.
Chelsea’s squad coming into this season heavily relied on the youth players. They performed way better than they were expected to. It was Chelsea’s perfect chance to sign some quality players in the January transfer window to release some pressure off the youngsters and it was also a great chance for them to solidify their place in the top 4. Chelsea were linked with many quality players such as Edison Cavani reportedly wanted to leave. Dries Mertens contract was running out in the summer and was available for only 7 million pounds. Chelsea were even linked with the likes of Moussa Dembele and Timo Werner. There respected clubs said they were not for sale and told Chelsea to look somewhere else. It was clear to see that Chelsea needed a forward to take the pressure of Tammy Abraham. Lampard made it clear that he wanted to bring a forward in after Chelsea’s narrow win against Hull City in the FA Cup.
It has been the story of Chelsea’s season, as they did not kill the games off and were in desperate need of a world class forward. However, the board failed to back the manager yet again. We have seen this for the last couple of years where the board have not backed the manager and club managed to suffer because of that. Ex Chelsea managers such as Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho were not given the players they wanted after they won Chelsea the league. They brought in mediocre players in order to paper over the cracks. Chelsea managed to finish outside the top 4 because of that. We have seen it yet again now, where the board failed to back Frank Lampard, a club legend who has performed over expectations this season. A lot of fans started to get frustrated because of that. Frank Lampard said it in his recent press conference where he made it clear he wanted to sign players. The Chelsea board left Lampard out to dry but fulfilling his wishes. This could potentially cost Chelsea a spot in the Champions League, since their top 4 rivals managed to strengthen in key areas.
Chelsea’s game against Leicester was a clear indication where they needed a top quality player in order to get them the win as they were a lot of chances where the Chelsea players failed to take. The Chelsea board really need to fix up as this is simply not acceptable. Chelsea want to get back right at the top but with the clowns upstairs they will not be able to as they do not back the manager. Manchester City and Liverpool have become unstoppable forces in the premier league as their board have managed to fulfill the managers wishes. But at Chelsea it has not happened in the last couple of years. Chelsea have managed to slipped down the ladder because of that. We have seen what Frank Lampard is capable of doing, but won’t be able to do much more if he is not given the tools It is as simple as that. He will not succeed if the board tend to penny pinch all the time. Chelsea have a lot of tough games coming up and I am not sure if they will be able to cope with it, as there are a lot of players who are knackered. Chelsea needed fresh faces in the squad to help them during this busy period. The Chelsea board have to act up in the summer and back the manager and if they fail to do so we won’t see Chelsea challenge for the title for a very long time.
