Tariq Lamptey, the 7th academy graduate to make their senior debut under Lampard, is set to earn himself a new contract amid transfer rumors. After coming off the bench in Chelsea’s exhilarating comeback against Arsenal and his brief cameo against Nottingham Forest, it is safe to say that Tariq Lamptey’s future looks bright. This is the story of Tariq Lamptey.

Youth Journey

At age seven, Tariq Lamptey joined Chelsea’s u7s team and has been rising through the ranks ever since. Lamptey made his youth team debut in the 2016/17 season in an away game against Manchester City. 

It was not until the 2017/18 season where Lamptey made a name for himself. With 11 assists and 1 vital goal that came against Manchester United in the National League final victory. He went on to become the highest u18s appearance-maker that season under Jody Morris’s famous quadruple.  

His breakout season for the u18s in the 2017/18 season earned himself a household name in Cobham. This resulted in his first international call up in the summer of 2018 for England’s u19 squad in the European Championship finals. He continued this impressive form and established himself as a key player under Joe Edwards’s development squad in the 2018/19 season.

Chelsea Debut

On December 29th, a surprised Lamptey was named on the bench for Chelsea’s clash against Arsenal. Chelsea still 1-0 down, needed an energetic spark to keep their chances alive. It’s the 59th minute of the game, Lampard decides to throw Lamptey into the deep end and Tomori is subbed off. Some Chelsea fans questioned if it was the right decision from Lampard to throw Lamptey into a tough debut but it was clear that Lampard’s faith in him was strong.

Lamptey’s energetic and fast runs down the right flank kept causing Arsenal real trouble. His combinations with Willian and fearless runs against Arsenal’s defenders were definitely impressing the fans and Lampard. 

His impact on the game without a doubt played a significant part in Chelsea’s comeback. With a pass success rate of 100% and an impressive defensive performance, Lamptey has certainly made a huge statement.

Lamptey’s performance earned himself a brief cameo against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup where he once again displayed an impressive performance despite the limited time.

With the likes of youngsters Reece James and Tariq Lamptey, it is safe to say that the right back position for Chelsea is in good hands. It is certain that Lamptey will get more minutes this season and Chelsea fans should be excited because Lamptey’s future looks promising. Whether Lamptey goes out on loan or stays to compete in the squad, it will definitely be a joy to watch him grow.
