After years of speculation about the Brazilian’s future Chelsea have to decide if they want to renew his contract with Frank Lampard is very eager to do just that. They could either keep him for another 2 years, as was reported earlier today or let him go for free by the end of this season. Chelsea did reject a £60m bid from Spanish giants Barcelona for the Brazilian in 2018, amid continued interest from the Spanish giants. A lot fans thought Chelsea were wrong not to accept that kind of money for a 30 year old.

The Brazilian has been at club for 6 years now and it is fair to say he has been very inconsistent during him time. However this season he has produced some magical moments and has stepped up in games when Chelsea needed him the most. After Eden Hazard’s departure, Willian was handed the No.10 shirt. So far this season Willian has shown improvements and is flourishing under new boss Frank Lampard. But does that warrant him a 2 year contract?

If Chelsea’s transfer ban is overturned and the club are allowed to buy players in the summer, it would be the perfect time to let go of the Brazilian. It would mean Chelsea can go out and sign some top quality wingers in the summer. Chelsea are linked with Jadon Sancho and he would be the perfect replacement if Chelsea sell Willian. Some people might argue saying that the young wingers can learn a thing or two from the Brazilian as he has a lot of experience. With the transitional period that Chelsea are going through right now, it would be the perfect time to start getting rid of the deadwood and start adding some real quality to the squad. Willian’s attacking display has not been the best and is known for his game when he’s off the ball, as he tracks back to regain possession.

But in the modern era you need a winger who constantly contributes to goals. The perfect example is Raheem Sterling. He has significantly improved under Pep Guardiola and the numbers speak for themselves. Willian has made 336 appearances for the club in the league and has only scored 63 goals in 6 seasons. His playing has not been the best as he has only provided 37 assists. His best season the in the Premier League was in the 16/17 season where he scored 8 goals in the league and provided 2 assists. And in this era Chelsea need top quality wingers who can contribute more.

Willian is currently 31 years old and although we as fans appreciate what he has done for the club, I think his time is done at the club and Chelsea should look at other players who will take this squad to another level.
