It’s the morning after the night before. It’s hard to put it into words how mental last night was. So let’s get straight into it. Chelsea hosted Ajax in the Champions League, the reverse fixture after Chelsea pulled off an incredible win in Amsterdam a few weeks ago. 3 points for Chelsea would put them in a very strong position to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition. Lampard made only one change after their win against Watford with Marcos Alonso replacing Emerson.

The game kicked off and Ajax had an early set piece as Azpilicueta made a clumsy challenge. Promes whipped the ball in and it touched Abraham on the way and went inside the back of the net. And just like that Ajax were in front. 2 minutes later Chelsea were awarded a penalty as Pulisic was brought down in the box by Veltman with a reckless challenge. Jorginho stepped up and tucked away his penalty calmly to bring the Blues back on terms. It was an incredible start to the game.

Chelsea then almost took the lead as Abraham put the ball into the back of the net, but unfortunately it was disallowed for offside. The game was end to end. Ziyech put in a fantastic ball inside the box and Promes was there to head the ball past Kepa Arrizabalaga and Ajax were back in front at the Bridge. The pass from Ziyech was sublime and Ajax were controlling the game, with Chelsea struggling. Alonso then made a poor challenge and Ajax were awarded another free kick. This time Ziyech stepped up. He crossed the ball in, it hit the post and found its way inside the back of the net as it hit Kepa’s face. Chelsea went 3-1 down and it would take a lot from them to come back into this game. The HT whistle blew and Ajax had punished Chelsea for their sloppy defensive mistakes.

Lampard made one change at half time as he brought on Reece James for Marcos Alonso, who had another poor game. The second half started and Chelsea were at it from the start. Zouma made an outrageous run from his own half but his shot let him down as it was way over the bar but it lifted the fans off their seats. It felt like Chelsea started to pick up some momentum. The Blues had a lot of chances but failed to take any of them. At the other end Ajax were clinical and made it 4-1 as van de Beek scored. The goal was against the run of play, and things were getting from bad to worse for Chelsea. Unfortunately Mason Mount came off as he got injured and Hudson-Odoi was brought on. Chelsea hit back instantly with Azpilicueta giving Chelsea hope as he tapped the ball inside the net and it was 4-2. Would we see another famous comeback from Chelsea in the champions league at the Bridge?

There was more drama to this game as Chelsea were awarded another penalty as Hudson-Odoi’s shot struck Veltman’s arm. Daley Blind was sent off for poor challenge on Abraham. Veltman was also dismissed t and Ajax were down to 9 men. Every single Chelsea fan were off their seat. After the drama had finally ended, Jorginho stepped up to take his penalty. He calmly tucked it away and Chelsea were right back in this game. The atmosphere at the Bridge was insane. It was Chelsea 3-4 Ajax, and Chelsea had 20 minutes to come back in this game. Incredible scenes, as Chelsea made it 4-4 as Reece James smashed the ball inside the back of the net. Zouma’s header hit the crossbar and Reece James was there to bring Chelsea back into the game. The 19 year old ran to the fans and Stamford Bridge was rocking and feeling like we could get a winner.

Ajax had had 2 players sent off and conceded two goals in 5 minutes. The game was mental. Chelsea managed to take the lead through captain Cesar Azpilicueta, but VAR disallowed the goal as it hit Tammy’s hand. This game was full of drama. What else was going to happen in this crazy game? Kepa then made a crucial save to keep Chelsea in the game as Alvarez’s shot was saved. The last chance of the game fell to Michy Batshuayi, who could have scored another late goal for the Blues but Onana made a terrific save. 4 minutes were added, but Chelsea slightly lost their momentum and couldn’t find the winner. The final whistle blew and what a game it was the Bridge. It had everything. It was another Champions League classic, as Chelsea managed to comeback after being 4-1 down. Reece James became the youngest Chelsea player to score in the Champions League.

Press Conference

‘It was a mad game. There is nothing I feel I can compare it to from my playing days, not even the 4-4 against Liverpool, because of the red cards and the VAR as well.’

Lampard speaking post-match

Frank says the spirit and character we showed were things that he loved and he believes our fans loved as well. He feels if we keep on showing those attributes, we can go far. On Reece James, scorer of tonight’s equaliser, Lampard says he is a fantastic young player. He explains the half-time change as being made to get more down the right wing and Reece’s quality justified that decision.

What’s next for Chelsea?

What a night it was, Chelsea came back from being 3 goals down to make it 4-4. The character that the boys showed was unbelievable. Stamford Bridge was rocking, and Chelsea fans were still disappointed that we didn’t manage to pull it off. Especially when Azpilicueta’s goal was disallowed. But we can see this team is special and can go very far under Frank Lampard. Chelsea face Crystal Palace next in the Premier League. Hopefully Chelsea keep continue their good form in the league and manage to get 3 points against the Eagles.
