Chelsea are facing a challenging test in the UEFA Champions League as they prepare to face the Eredivsie champions Ajax. The Blues will travel away to Amsterdam in search of a much needed win to keep their hopes of progression into the knockout stages of Europe’s most illustrious competition alive. Chelsea have been praised for their approach to this season especially as they have embarked on five match winning run, with their most recent victory coming against a sturdy Newcastle side on the weekend.
Our opponents Ajax are the reigning Dutch Champions and last season’s Champions league semi finalists, who unfortunately were knocked out by North London side Tottenham Hotspur by finest of margins, the away goal rule back in May of this year. Their iconic achievements and progression has been a result of their young excellent players, with one of them departing for the Bianconeri this past summer defender De Ligt. Players such as Van De Beek, Ziyech Frenkie De Jong, now of Barcelona, and Dusan Tadic have provided aspects of renovation for this historic club.
The 26 year old wide midfielder was expected to be one of those that left during the summer after starring during the team’s run to the semi-final last season. However he has decided to stay with club of Amsterdam as he looking to create more historic moments this season. In their last Champions league game, they defeated Spanish side Valencia 3-0 away from home. Ziyech scored a marvellous goal to continue his excellent form of contributions. The midfielder was involved in dynamic plays across the game completing 22 of 31 attacking third passes.
It’s been fair to say that Jorginho has been one of Chelsea’s most consistent players this season and has been an essential presence in our midfield. During pre-season it was heavily speculated that he would also leave the club alongside former manager Maurizio Sarri. However he’s decide to stay in South-West London in Fulham’s SW6 area and has showcased his majestic ball playing ability to the highest of levels, being a convincing Premier League central midfielder. In his most recent performance against Newcastle, the Italian made 34 out of his 39 attacking third passes. Jorginho will have a huge responsibility on Wednesday as once again the team will look to him as the essential facilitator of this team.
Ajax do not have any major selection concerns ahead of tomorrow’s Champions League contest. The home side are expected to start with Ziyech, Quincy Promes and Dusan Tadic.
There are concerns over Ross Barkley as he was substituted during first half of Saturdays league match as it is believed he has picked up an injury.
