Before I start this article starts I’m not saying that Alonso deserves a starting place but he’s been a solid option for us at the back for the past few games whilst Emerson has our on the sidelines injured.
During this time, Alonso has had some decent performances for us and I believe the hate he has got has been unbelievable and he should get some credit for what’s he’s done. His crossing has improved overall, with an assist so far in the Premier League campaign and his clumsiness is starting to fade away, as he’s only been dispossessed twice and has been decent defensively. But he has made some mistakes. He did cost a goal at Liverpool, currently the second slowest player in the team and has been sloppy at times. But overall, we have seen an improvement in Alonso from recent performances.
But do we need a new left back? I believe we don’t. At the moment, we have Emerson currently on form but we’ll need to wait to see if it continues. Alonso is a decent left back and has proven so in the past few games, but if we want to challenge for the Premier League and in Europe we’re going to need competition.
My conclusion is if we get an offer for Alonso, then we should take it. But I wouldn’t be against keeping him for the 2020/21 season and then sell him in the next summer and buy a top class left back to properly compete with Emerson. I feel like we have other areas to prioritise and LB isn’t at the top of the list. Or we can rely on the youth as we do have Castillo currently on at Ajax so if he doesn’t get sold to Ajax he could be a resolution to this case we have. Alternatively and far more likely, Ian Maatsen is another young player that has already got minutes under Lampard. Hopefully Alonso can continue this level of performance.
