We’re now well and truly into the part of the season where the fixtures come thick and fast, and after a flurry of home games, the first of a series of away fixtures takes place on Wednesday, as Chelsea return to Champions League football. The Blues face Lille, a team they have surprisingly never played before, with a good performance needed to take home a much needed three points. After the opening round defeat to Valencia, the second game in the group has become a must win for Chelsea. Draw or lose this and things become very tricky for the London club.
Two home wins on the bounce including a 7-1 thrashing of Grimsby and a comfortable 2-0 win over Brighton, have given Chelsea confidence in the way they’re playing and belief that they can get the win. Lille are currently fourth in Ligue 1, and seem to be coping well after the departure of Nicolas Pepe to Arsenal. Their form has been inconsistent with the club yet to record back to back wins so far this season, but at home, they will pose a very real threat to this Chelsea side.
Hopefully we’ll see a much improved performance from the Valencia game and no lapses of concentration which led to their goal. The game against Brighton at the weekend saw us give a consistently good performance over the 90 minutes for the first time this season. Lampard will be hoping we can continue that against Lille and come away with our first Champions League win of the season.
Antonio Rüdiger remains out injured as does Emerson, with a return date of after the international break set for the Italian. Olivier Giroud is fully recovered from the illness which heavily impacted him all of last week, whilst Zouma could be ready to return after an illness of his own. Barkley has travelled despite his issues off the field at the weekend, while Kante will be assessed tomorrow.
