Since the start of the season Lampard has had a couple of dodgy moments whilst at the same time he has shown some promising signs as well. Since there is an International break I thought I would assess 5 things we have learnt about Frank Lampard’s Chelsea so far.

Press as a unit

Lampard expects his side to press as a unit and we have seen that throughout the season so far. However, it also leaves us vulnerable at times especially on the counter attack, with large gaps visible between the midfield and defensive lines. The Chelsea team press with hunger and are keen to get back the ball as quickly as possible.

Not afraid to play the youngsters

Tomori got his first start of the season against Sheffield United last week where Chelsea drew 2-2. He looked very promising as well, despite the result. Lampard also brought on youngster Billy Gilmour which clearly states that he has put faith in all of his young players so far. You can also look at players such as Mount and Tammy Abraham who have already made a terrific impact on the team. Especially Mason Mount since he got his first England call up.

Style of play

The Chelsea side look slick and sharp, playing with an attacking intent as they move the ball very quickly. Lampard’s offensive style is quick attacking movement and the Chelsea players try their best to play in that manner. You get a certain feeling that every time Chelsea move forward they can get a goal. Moving forward we have been brilliant, the main issues lie in defence.

Chelsea need Kante as soon as possible…

As we all saw, N’Golo Kante had a terrific impact when he played against Liverpool in the Super Sup and it was a performance to remember from the Frenchmen. Kante has struggled with injuries since the end of last season and since the International break is back it’s probably the best for his recovery. Chelsea need his energy in midfield. especially when they are being hit on the counter. We saw against Sheffield United, how badly Chelsea missed Kante.

Azpilicueta is a liability…

Frank Lampard has been very unlucky with injuries since his arrival. Players like Reece James and Antonio Rudiger who could be very crucial to Chelsea’s defence, are still out injured. And since Azpilicueta has been playing at RB we can see that he doesn’t have the legs anymore. It seems a lack of rest over the past few seasons has finally caught up with him. Against Sheffield United he was very poor in the second the half, and was getting rinsed by Championship level wingers. He needs to be on the bench for a couple of games in order to gain his form and energy and when Reece James is back he needs to show what he can offer for the Blues.

What’s next for Chelsea?

So far Chelsea have had a weird start to the season, although we have seen many promising signs from them, they have to improve defensively. We have been very unlucky with injuries so far and hopefully things will start to improve when players like Reece James, Loftus-Cheek, Hudson-Odoi and Rudiger come back. Chelsea play Wolves away from home after the International break. It won’t be an easy game but I’m confident we will see a reaction from this Chelsea team.
