The winners of the Champions League and the winners of the Europa League were two English teams this year. Liverpool beat Spurs the Champions League final and Chelsea best Arsenal in the Europa League final.
Liverpool came into this game with a lot of confidence as they had a perfect start to their Premier League campaign. Chelsea on the other hand got battered 4-0 by Manchester United with fans wanting to see a better performance from their team. Lampard, in my opinion, picked the perfect starting 11. Giroud came back into to the side and so did N’Golo Kante while Pulisic made his first start for Chelsea as well.
The game kicked off and Liverpool started off the game very well. Early on in the game Liverpool were creating a lot of problems for Chelsea. Kepa made a fantastic save to deny Mo Salah. As the game went on Chelsea improved a lot. Kante and Pedro were pressing high and making some good challenges. Chelsea came very close in the first half when Pedro hit the cross bar and it felt like Chelsea would get the next goal.
Liverpool’s defence found it difficult to cope with Pedro and Pulisic. On the 36th minute Pulisic played a fantastic ball to Giroud and he converted his chance to give Chelsea the lead. The pass was sublime and the finish was top quality. Chelsea almost doubled their lead through Pulisic as he scored a fantastic goal. But unfortunately it was disallowed as Pulisic was offside. At HT it was 1-0 to Chelsea and it was the perfect response from the Blues after their 4-0 defeat.
The second half kicked off and Liverpool introduced Roberto Firmino into the game and subbed off Oxlade-Chamberlain. It made a huge difference as Firmino assisted Sadio Mane to bring Liverpool back into the game. Chelsea started the second half poorly but there was still time for improvement. Later on in the game Kepa made a fantastic double save to keep Chelsea in the game. Salah’s shot was deflected and Kepa reacted well and Van Dijk almost converted his chance but Kepa pulled off another world class save.
Lampard made 3 substitutions as Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount And Tomori came off the bench. Mounts goal was disallowed as it was offside. The final whistle blew and we were heading to another 30 minutes of football. Chelsea were caught on the back foot yet again and Sadio Mane converted his chance to give Liverpool the lead in extra time. The goal came in the 95th minute and Chelsea still had a lot of time to come back into this game. A few minutes later, Tammy Abraham was brought down by Adrian inside the penalty box and was awarded a penalty. Jorginho calmly tucked it away to bring Chelsea back into the game. Abraham missed a glorious chance to put Chelsea in the lead as Pedro provided a beautiful cutback to him. But he was unfortunate as the ball did not go inside the back of the net. The first half of ET came to an end and both the teams were level yet again.
The second half was a bit dull and no team had any clear goal scoring opportunities. The final whistle of extra time blew and we were heading to penalties as both teams could not be separated.
Liverpool went first and Firmino tucked away his penalty. Jorginho stepped up and levelled it up for the Blues. Fabinho converted his penalty and Liverpool were 2-1 up. Ross Barkley made it 2-2. Origi converted his penalty to but Liverpool back in front. Mason Mount stepped up and scored a brilliant penalty. It was 3-3. Trent scored his penalty. Emerson stepped up and made it 4-4. Mo Salah converted Liverpool’s 5th penalty. All the pressure was on Tammy Abraham. Unfortunately Tammy missed his penalty as Adrian saved it and Liverpool were crowned winners of the Super Cup. It was another defeat for Chelsea in the Super Cup on penalties. But all the fans must be proud of the boys tonight.
‘My overall feeling is one of pride. I’m a terrible loser but I’m happy with the team performance because we were very unfortunate.’
Lampard says there were good signs today from his team. He believes if they keep on playing like that and improving then we will have a good season. On Abraham’s saved spot-kick in the shootout, Frank says:
‘I’ve told him not to worry. I’ve missed penalties before, anyone can miss, but what I want to see is the confidence of a young player to step up.’
What’s next for Chelsea?
After a heart breaking loss for the Blues on penalties against Liverpool, it is fair to say these lads gave it their all. Everyone put a shift in and played for the shirt. It’s harsh to lose on penalties but that’s football. And chin up Tammy Abraham. It’s rough what happened but he will only learn from this. If Chelsea keep playing like this I feel we will have a very successful season under Lampard, and things are looking very good. Chelsea play Leicester on Sunday as it’s our first home game of the season and hopefully we can get 3 points.
UP THE CHELS!
