Manchester United hosted Chelsea at Old Trafford for the opening game of the season. Chelsea fans have been buzzing since Lampard became their new manager, but unfortunately things did not go according to plan.
There was a strange feeling within the fans when they saw the lineup. Ross Barkley started on the left hand side for the Blues. To be honest it wasn’t the best decision that Lampard made.
Chelsea started the game off very well. They were pressing high and were causing a lot of trouble for Manchester United. Tammy Abraham hit the post in the 4th minute of the game and was very unfortunate to not find the back of the net. A few minutes later Pedro gave the ball away which put Zouma in a difficult position and he made a clumsy challenge on Marcus Rashford inside the penalty box. The referee blew his whistle and awarded a penalty to Manchester United. Rashford scored from the spot to make it 1-0 to the Red Devils. The goal was completely against the run of play and United took control of the game when they took the lead.
Just before half time Chelsea found their flow again and were very close to levelling the score as Emerson hit the post. At HT the game was 1-0 and Chelsea were very much in it.
The second half began and Chelsea were on the front foot yet again, it felt like they be getting the next goal. But Chelsea got caught on the counter attack and Martial made it 2-0 for United. A very good cross was put in by Andrea Pereira. 17 seconds later Azpilicueta switched off and Rashford was through on goal after Pogba provided a stunning ball to make it 3-0. The game was certainly over and Chelsea were not coming back into this. Daniel James made his Manchester United debut and scored a goal to make it 4-0.
Lampard’s first game In charge for the Blues was turning into a nightmare. The full time whistle blew and Chelsea were humiliated once again away from home against a top 6 team.
‘The fans saw a team trying to do the right things, which is why they were receptive to us at the end. We don’t want to lose 4-0 and it does hurt but it wasn’t a normal 4-0 defeat.’Frank Lampard speaking after the game
What’s next for Chelsea?
After a disappointing defeat against Manchester United, Chelsea have to improve. There were a lot of positives from today. We have been crying out for youth and we finally got what we wanted. Players like Mason Mount looked very good today. People have to be patient and trust Lampard because this is a huge project for him. Chelsea will head down to Istanbul to play Liverpool in the UEFA Super cup. Hopefully we can see a positive response from the Blues and bring that trophy home.
UP THE CHELS!
