The midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek is poised to sit down with the club’s hierarchy to discuss a new contract in a bid to keep him at Stamford Bridge.
Loftus-Cheek has had a turbulent season in terms of booking a place in the first team starting lineup. However, he has always been a fan favourite and is proven to have patience for him to really breakthrough into the Chelsea starting 11.
During the summer of 2018, Loftus-Cheek had an unbelievable moment with the England team as he was apart of the overachieving young three lions squad who had reached the semi finals of the World Cup for the first time since 1990. Due to his excellent contributions to the national team in the summer, a large amount of transfer speculation was created. The 23 year old had doubts whether if he would want to continue his football at the South West London club which almost saw him leave the club on loan in January amid interest from a host of Premier League rivals.
Loftus-Cheek’s current contract at Stamford Bridge is set to expire in the summer of 2021, although the club want to avoid another situation similar to that of Callum Hudson-Odoi and tie down the academy graduate to a long-term deal.
Key Details of Loftus-Cheek’s season
The England midfielder has appeared 23 times for Chelsea in the Premier League, 17 of those appearances coming from the bench. His influences on the team have been his athleticism, strength, composure and his ability to drive with the ball to create goal scoring chances for the Blues. In the league the midfielder has created 8 goals, six goals and two assists. During Thursday’s draw with Frankfurt in the Europa League, Loftus-Cheek set a new high by completing a staggering amount of nine take ons which also set a new record in the UCL or UEL, as no player has ever reached that amount of take ons in a knockout game this season.
Sarri has definitely felt the improvements of Loftus-Cheek this season, which has later made the Italian believe that he is a very important player to this club and has no intention on selling him in the summer. Sarri has stated “his confidence in space is very good. He is very strong. He is a good attacking midfielder”.
