In this article I will be rating the Chelsea players for the performances they have produced over the course of the 18/19 season. Each player will be given a score out of 10. So lets get started:
Kepa Arrizabalaga: 7/10
Chelsea signed Kepa from Athletic Bilbao in order to replace Thibaut Courtois who left the Blues to join Real Madrid. Kepa is the world’s most expensive goalkeeper and
Chelsea bought him for £71 million. Chelsea signed him on a 7 year deal and it’s fair to say that he has made a very good impression since joining. Some of the saves that he has made this season have been absolutely incredible and have certainly won Chelsea a couple of points. In the Premier League Kepa managed to keep 13 clean sheets. His distribution has been very good this season and he has adapted well to Sarri’s system. However, he has made a couple of mistakes but that is expected of any goal keeper. Kepa is only 24 years old and is on a 7 year contract, as he is still young he will keep on improving for Chelsea.
Willy Caballero: 5/10
Caballero has made a couple for appearances of Chelsea this season, mostly in the cup games. He only managed to start one game for Chelsea in the league against Tottenham and he also managed to keep a clean sheet. Considering that Caballero did not get a lot of game time for Chelsea this season, the games that he started he put some decent performances in. 5/10 is a fair rating for the Argentinian.
Robert Green: N/A
Green has not played a single game for Chelsea this season and he was only signed because he was a home grown player and brought experience.
Antonio Rudiger: 7/10
Rudiger has had his moments this season for Chelsea. At times he has been rock solid at the back, he would never be scared to go into a tackle. Playing out the back he has been very impressive. He has played around more than 2000 passes and 149 accurate long balls. His distribution has been a joy to watch at times this season. It is fair to say that he is a true leader on and off the pitch. However, at times he has had his bad moments but so have the whole team. He has been criticised a lot this season and he does not deserve it. He has put a lot of good performances for Chelsea this season and he will improve in the future.
Andreas Christensen: 6/10
The majority of the games that Christensen has played for Chelsea this season have been in the cups and in Europe. At times he has looked shaky at the back, but he has also had a couple of good games. He is still young and will certainly reach his potential in the future. Going forward he will be key to Sarri’s system as he is a very good passer of the ball and his distribution is certainly a joy to watch.
Cesar Azpilicueta: 5/10
It is fair to say that Chelsea’s captain has not had the best of seasons. You really can’t blame him because he is 29 and he does not have the legs to play right back anymore. Sarri has overused him this season by playing him week in, week out and at times he looks knackered. He really has struggled to cope with the pace of some wingers this season. However, he has put some decent performances in for Chelsea season and he should be a squad player for next season.
David Luiz: 6/10
When it comes to talking about the Brazilian he has been very inconsistent this season.
In some games he has been rock solid at the back, his distribution at times have been splendid, and he has popped up with a couple of vital goals as well. However, his defending at times has been absolutely awful and has been at fault many times this season.
Marcos Alonso: 4/10
It is fair to say that Marcos Alonso has been dreadful for Chelsea this season. He looks very dodgy while defending and going forward he is too slow. If he goes forward he does not come back in time and help the team defend and his crossing has not improved throughout the course of this season. He has put some good performances in, but overall he has not been good enough for Chelsea.
Emerson has been an improvement on Alonso and has put a couple of good performances in but at times he has also been shaky. Defensively and offensively he offers a lot more than Alonso and he should have gotten more game time by Maurizio Sarri.
Gary Cahill: N/A
He has barely played for Chelsea this season and I cannot give him a proper rating.
Davide Zappacosta: N/A
He has not played enough games for Chelsea this season in order for me to give him a
Ethan Ampadu: N/A
He’s only played a couple of times this season, and in numerous positions so I can’t give him a proper rating.
This is an interesting one. Chelsea signed Jorginho from Napoli for £57 million. He is essential to Sarri’s system and this is why Sarri wanted him because he worked with him at his time at Napoli. Jorginho has had games where he has absolutely controlled the midfield and played some great forward passes. However, at times he has been suspect. He would get bossed in the big games and would not contribute at all. Chelsea fans have not been patient with him and at times have booed him as well. It is fair to say that he has not adapted to the Premier League and the physicality of this league. This the main reason why he has looked poor at times. But he deserves time to adapt and could come in handy for Chelsea in the next couple of seasons.
Mateo Kovacic: 5/10
Chelsea signed Mateo Kovacic from Real Madrid on a one year loan deal. He started off the season very well and looked impressive. But his form has dipped drastically. His end product has been very poor, it looks like he is too scared to shoot and always looks for the easier option by passing the ball. Sarri has played him in Jorginho’s position at times and he has looked impressive but overall he does not offer a lot going forward.
Ross Barkley: 5.5/10
Started of the season very well and was scoring a couple of goals and it felt like he was going to become a different player under Sarri but during the second half of the season his form went downhill and was not contributing a lot. He was average at best during the second half of the season.
N’Golo Kante: 8.5/10
He has been absolutely superb for Chelsea this season. Always gives it his all, always tries to win the ball back after he gives it away. He has made a couple of mistakes, but it is understandable since he is adjusting to a new position but he has adapted well in his new role and also been scoring a couple of goals which is rare for him.
Ruben Loftus Cheek: 8/10
He is easily one of the best midfielders after N’Golo Kante in this Chelsea midfield, and he is looked very impressive every time he steps on to the pitch. Going forward he always causes a threat and he is very good and strong on the ball. He is still very young and will play a crucial part for this Chelsea team in the future.
Danny Drinkwater: N/A
He has not played at all for Chelsea this season in order for me to give him a rating.
Gonzalo Higuain: 4.5/10
It is fair to say that Higuain has failed to hit the ground running at Stamford Bridge this season. He was signed on a 6 month loan deal and he has not been impressive since his
arrival. He has looked good at times and scored a couple of goals but overall he has not been able to adapt to the Premier League.
Olivier Giroud: 7/10
Most of Giroud’s appearances have come in the Europa League and he has not failed to disappoint. It is fair to say that he should have started more games in the league for Chelsea this season, as he is very good while holding up the ball and can link up very well. He is also a major threat in the box. Although, he does needs to improve his finishing.
Callum Hudson Odoi: 8/10
The 18 year old has been very impressive for Chelsea for the amount of games he has played this season. He got his first start in the Premier League in April against Brighton at home where he registered an assist. He has been very good for Chelsea in Europe and he is one hell of a talent and he will surely improve in the future.
Pedro has been very inconsistent for Chelsea this season and has not really contributed a lot. In the Europa League and in the Premier League he has looked good at times but overall he has not been good enough.
He has been very poor by his standards this season and has not contributed a lot in terms of goals and assists. It is fair to say that it he has been average at best this season.
Eden Hazard: 9/10
In my opinion he has been Chelsea’s best player this season and statistically it has been his best season for Chelsea. He has been very crucial for Chelsea this season as he has the most goals/assists contribution in the Premier League this season. Although, he has had a couple of bad games he still has been a joy to watch and he will be missed by Chelsea if he decides to leave in the summer.
These are my player ratings for the 18/19 season.
