Chelsea hosted Watford in the Premier League today. As this was Chelsea’s last home game in the league for this season, they wore their new home kit for their final match at Stamford Bridge. This game was very important for the Blues as they needed to get 3 points in order to move into 3rd position since Tottenham lost 1-0 to Bournemouth yesterday. Chelsea came up against a Watford side who have to be feared since they have been really good this season.
It is fair to say that in the first half Watford were all over Chelsea and Kepa made a terrific save in the first half to deny Troy Deeney. Chelsea were lucky to walk out at HT with the score being 0-0. In the second it was complete turnaround from Chelsea and they looked like a different team. A bit of brilliance from Eden hazard as he crossed the ball into the box and Loftus-Cheek was at the right place at the right time and he gave Chelsea the lead. Three minutes later Chelsea made it 2-0 as David Luiz headed the ball inside the back of the net from a corner to extend the lead. It was a beautiful cross by Eden Hazard. Higuain then put the icing on cake as he chipped Forster to make it 3-0 after a brilliant pass by Pedro. Chelsea came out 3-0 winners as it was a must win for them. Chelsea moved into 3rd position a point head of Tottenham.
- Watford haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last 40 Premier League games against ‘big six’ opponents, last recording a shutout in February 2016 against Chelsea at Vicarage Road.
- Chelsea have named a starting XI with no English players for the 20th time in the Premier League this season – only Arsenal in 2006-07 (33) and 2007-08 (27) have done so more in a single campaign.
- Hazard has been directly involved in 31 Premier League goals for Chelsea this season (16 goals, 15 assists); only Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (32 – 2000/01), Frank Lampard (36 – 2009/10) and Didier Drogba (39 – 2009/10) have had a hand in more in a single campaign for Chelsea.
- Hazard has assisted 15 goals in the league this season more than any other player in the big five European leagues in 2018-19.
“I think in the first half we were tired, mentally. We were in trouble. Then they lowered their intensity. We were lucky to score after two minutes – we improved mentally after first goal. We played very well for 35 minutes then. It’s not easy to play after 60 hours. After Europa League away games we’ve only won one match.Maurizio Sarri post match
“When you are not brilliant physically you have to move the ball, the ball isn’t tired, the man is tried. In the second half we did it better as something changed in our minds.”
Loftus Cheek: 8
What’s next for Chelsea?
Chelsea have secured top 4 after Arsenal drew to Brighton at home. The Blues will be playing Champions league football next season, as they finally took their chance after their rivals kept dropping points. Chelsea will host Frankfurt in the second leg of the Europa League on Thursday. The first leg ended 1-1 and Chelsea got a crucial away goal through Pedro. Since Chelsea have secured top 4, they would still want to win a trophy by the end of season. Chelsea will play Leicester on the last day of the season away from home and a win would secure 3rd position for Chelsea.
