Monday’s game against Burnley at the Bridge not only resulted in a highly frustrating 2-2 draw, but it also finished with injuries to Callum Hudson-Odoi, 18 and N’Golo Kante, 28. While the latter seems to have come off with a less serious injury, Assistant Chelsea Manager and Blues legend Gianfranco Zola, explained after the match that Kante had a knock to the ribs that made it hard to breathe but he should be back and fit quickly.
However, Zola first broke the news that Callum Hudson-Odoi’s injury did not look good and later was revealed that he suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon, leaving the Bridge on crutches. Hudson-Odoi came off after 40 minutes played, meaning Pedro was brought into play. This unfortunately means the 18-year-old winger will miss the rest of the season.
Callum Hudson-Odoi who was heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich in January, has been patient in waiting for his chance to break into the starting eleven for his childhood club and this horrible injury means Chelsea fans should expect to see Pedro or Willian reverted back into the starting line-up. Hudson-Odoi has scored five goals since making his first team debut season and only recently broke into England’s senior squad starting in their 5-0 win against Montenegro. With Chelsea’s transfer ban potentially being overturned for the summer, this means they should be desperately looking for another winger now their future talent is out and Eden Hazard to the Bernabéu is looking more and more likely by the day.
On Wednesday, Chelsea provided fans with an update on Callum Hudson-Odoi’s injury saying; “Callum is seeing a specialist this afternoon and is expected to undergo surgery on his ruptured Achilles tendon this evening”.
What does this mean now?
With 3 Premier League matches remaining till the end of the season against Manchester United, Watford and Leicester City, it is expect that Sarri will bring back Willian or Pedro for these fixtures and N’Golo Kante should at least make the bench and be back to full fitness soon. As for next season, Chelsea’s January signing of the American winger Christian Pulisic who is currently on loan at Dortmund, must be introduced as soon as possible in the upcoming season. The Blues simply must be targeting another winger in the summer after this devastating injury news and only time will tell if this materialises.
