Liverpool hosted Chelsea in the Premier League today, a game which was a must win for both the teams. Liverpool who are fighting to win the it and Chelsea who are trying to finish in the top 4 in order to get Champions League football next season.

There was a lot of positivity among the Chelsea fans when they saw the lineup. Two players that Chelsea fans were begging Maurizio Sarri to start were starting. Hudson Odoi and Ruben Loftus Cheek were handed another start in the Premier League and it was fair to say that they were not that good today. Certain Chelsea fans were not too sure about Maurizio Sarri starting Eden Hazard in a false 9 position. A position that Eden Hazard does not like to be played in.

In the first half, Chelsea completely shut down Liverpool and were very impressive in the first half. Willian had a great chance to put Chelsea in the lead but it was inches away from the net. Unfortunately, Antonio Rudiger suffered an injury and was subbed off for Andreas Christensen. Moving on to the second half, it was the same old from Chelsea. A lapse of concentration and Sadio Mane headed the ball inside the back of the net. Minutes later Mo Salah, the former Chelsea player, came back to haunt them and scored an absolute beauty to double Liverpool’s lead. It was one of those goals where Kepa could not do anything about it. Chelsea had a couple of chances to bring themselves back into the game but Eden Hazard hit the post and also failed to convert another chance minutes later. In a game of few opportunities Chelsea failed to capitalise and suffered another defeat away from home against the top 6 this season. It is fair to say that this Chelsea team lack leaders and in the second half it was truly a spineless performance.

This win puts Liverpool back at the top of the table and this could finally be their year where they could go on and win the league. As for Chelsea they are back in 4th position and could be 5th by tomorrow if Arsenal win against Watford.

Managers

Jurgen Klopp was very happy with his side as they beat Chelsea 2-0 and who could blame him?

“It was a really good game, difficult against strong opponents. I thought we dominated in areas. The rhythm was really good. We tried, created, passed and shot – we did pretty much everything. Salah’s goal was brilliant, world-class. A really, really, good goal from our side. It was a brilliant goal in all departments.”

Here is what Maurizio Sarri had to say about the game as Chelsea suffered another defeat away from home against the top six.

“We played a good match against wonderful opponents. We stayed in the match for 50 minutes. Probably at this moment they are better than us, but we are going the right way. We are improving. Three months ago, we were not able to stay in the match.”
